The town sits on a bluff overlooking the Muskegon River and offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The history of Owatonna can be traced back to 1853 when Dakota Sioux Indians named it after their village in upper Missouri River County, Iowa. They built a trading post here due to shortages of food available downstream from their tribe's traditional hunting grounds inMinnesota and Wisconsin. When they first arrived in this area they were largely hunter-gatherers which means they relied mainly on natural resources such as animal hides and meat for their subsistence. As settlement began to grow around this trading post, people started harvesting crops such as corn, potatoes, beans and wheat which gave rise to the name "Owatonna" ( meaning "place where there are many goods"). In 1906, when Owatonna became an incorporated municipality it adopted its current name based on its location within what is now Grand Rapids Township - one of three townships in Michigan that have been organized under the Municipal Corporations Act (MCA) since 1907. Today's economy relies heavily upon education; owatonna offers over forty high school diploma/equivalent programs along with four colleges/universities: Wayne State University (Dag Hammarskjold Campus), Northern Illinois University (DeKalb Campus), Midwestern State University (Wichita Campus)and Western Michigan University (Grand Rapids Campus). With over two hundred full-time faculty members working at these institutions plus nearly seventy part-time faculty members affiliated with other universities throughout Michigan and Indiana, owatona offers an extensive array of undergraduate programs leading to certificates/degrees or professional certification levels such as business administration/management/marketing/government relations etc., which allows students access to jobs across all sectors throughout America.
