In addition to its academic affiliation with Purdue, Owatonna also has been home to several professional teams during its history including the Owatonna Americans (Athletic Club), which played their first game in 1902; the Owatonna Wildcats (now known as Hennepin County Wildcats), who were a member of Touchback League baseball from 1959-1973; and most recently, the Menominee Tribe of Wisconsin Rapids which play professional lacrosse at nearby Target Field. Owatonna has experienced various economic changes throughout its history including waves of Japanese immigration during World War II; an influx of farmers during Reconstruction following the American Civil War; increased manufacturing activity due to peanut production during World War II; and recent increases in energy production due to oil exploration east of Interstate 94 near present day Owatona. Owatonna was founded in 1857 by Norwegian immigrants as a fur trading post on the east side of the Mississippi River. The town was named after Captain John Owatonna, who had been captain of a ship that sailed downriver from Norway to trade with the Dakota Sioux and other Native Americans during the mid-19th century. In 1892, Owatonna became an independent city, and it has since grown into one of the most affluent communities in Minnesota. The town has several large shopping malls, golf courses, and five professional sports teams: the Vikings (NFL), Hawks (NHL), Golden Gophers (NCAA), Timberwolves (NBA), and Sabres (AHL). Origins of Owatonna Captain John Owatonna established Owlatoonna fur trading post on east side Mississippi River in 1857 amidst hostile Dakota Sioux tribe warriors living along river banks. After successfully trading goods with these Native American groups for many years, Captain John's outpost grew into an important center for commerce within what would become Minnesota Territory under US government control in 1858.
