Owatonna, Minnesota is a small town in the rural area of Iron County. It was founded in 1854 and has been home to the Owatonna School District since 1871. Over time, Owatonna has become known for itsbinoculars business, which began developing in the early 1800s. The first binoculars were made from pieces of glass that were cut into a shape resembling a lens and then glued to a piece of wood or metal. By the 1830s, there were at least six businesses located in Owatonna that specialized in making binoculars. However, it wasn’t until 1884 that owatanobinocular manufacturers started producing their own brand name products. This was due to the efforts of two men who had come to Owatonna from Minneapolis: John Hargrave and Ebenezer Post. The first owatanobinocular production line was built by Hargrave and Post using materials found at an old mill on the edge of town. They produced around 10,000 pairs of binoculars per year until 1892 when they switched to cast aluminum frames as their primary product line. The reason behind this switch was cost-effective; aluminum could be cheaply produced while still providing high quality because it does not corrode over time like steel does. After moving their production lines back to Owatoni nd continuing production until 1924, John Hargrave became one of the most famous owatanobinocular producers in history. He continues to be remembered today as the founder of both Owens Eye Company and Castorama Corporation (now part of Nikon). Over time, there have been many modifications made to modern binocular technology such as digital optics and image stabilization systems which have allowed them to become more versatile than ever before. In fact, according to The Wireless Observer’s 2018 report on America’s Most Innovative Technology Companies, “ Binocularity has surpassed any other form [of optical observation] for seeing details at close range thanks largely to advances in digital optics and image stabilization technologies." The Minneapolis-St. Paul Railroad reached Owatonna in 1892 and the city began to grow rapidly thanks to its proximity to the railroad and rice fields that lay just outside of town. By the early 1920s, Owatonna had a population of over 30,000 people and it became one of the leading cotton communities in America. In 1924, Owatonna voters passed a resolution demanding that Minneapolis fire all black firefighters because they felt these firefighters were contributing to race riots across the Twin Cities region. This decision set off a series of racially charged controversies that continue to this day. In 1948, racist violence erupted when white supremacists marched through downtown Owatonna to demand passage of a referendum authorizing segregated housing within city limits
In 1881, Owatonna was founded as a small settlement by Norwegian immigrants. The town grew rapidly in the early years of its existence, and by 1907 had a population of over 100 people. In 1971, Owatonna became an incorporated city.
