Owatonna is a city in Wright County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1854 by Danish immigrants and has since been known for its rifle ammunition and shotguns. Ammunition production began in Owatonna in 1865 and continued until the early 1970s when it was replaced by plastics manufacturing. The old factory still stands as a museum within the city limits of Owatonna,Minnesota today

Owatonna Ammunition Depot was established in 1899 by the Dutchman, Cornelius H. van der Velde. The depot was located on Third Street in Owatonna and served as a center for firearms manufacturing and distribution. It also handled ammunition importation from various countries. In 1907, the depot was closed due to financial difficulties, but it reopened in 1916 with new facilities at 12th Avenue and First Street. In 1948, the depot closed again due to economic problems and its assets were sold to the County of Owatonna for use as a public works project. The depot finally closed in 1951 when its assets were transferred to the city of Owatonna.
Owatonna is a small town in Minnesota, located on the banks of the Owatonna River. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. The first settler in what would become Owatonna was James Kintz in 1853. Kintz was a fur trader who traveled through this region and named his village after his friend, Atticus Finch from Boston, Massachusetts. In 1858, John Prentice built a log cabin on what would become Prentice Drive in what would later become known as Owatonna Township. In 1870, Isaac Hayes organized a farmers' league which proposed building a steamboat landing on the river for shipping goods between Stearns County and central Minnesota. This proposal was accepted by local officials and construction began on the Landing House in 1871. By 1880, there were over 100 residents living in Owatona Township with several stores and two businesses listed on the township's website as of 2011 In 1899, an actwas passed creating Hennepin County following Minnesota statehood The county seat at that time was Minneapolis Accordingly, many people abandoned their homes in what became known as "the Great Lakes Suburbs" to seek new opportunities within Hennepin County By 1902 there were only eight residents living in Owatonna Township while four business entities operated out of three stores: Wernick & Co; Button Bros.; Jansen & Sons Grain Merchants Ltd.. One year later there were twelve residents but no businesses reported operations because it had been decided that Owatonna should be the county seat In 1912, election results showed that Republican incumbent David Sauer had won with over eighty percent of votes statewide while Democrat Augustus Kahn received less than twenty percent due to large percentage margins among rural voters

The town was founded by Danish immigrants around 1855 as a result of the American Civil War; the town was renamed Owatonna on December 22, 1865, after General Samuel Prentice Osborn's victory at Battle of Fort Snelling over United States forces under Major General Andrew J. Johnson. The town had been a farming community until World War II when it became an munitions plant; since then it has become an industrial center with manufacturing including aluminum products, shipbuilding, aircraft construction, textiles and plastics production among others. In 1984, Owatonna became one of only two communities in Minnesota (the other being Brooklyn Heights) to receive statehood as a result of the Minnesota Statutes 180A; since then it has made various strides towards becoming more economically vibrant and culturally supportive through its efforts to promote arts and culture as well as education within its borders.
