The post became known for its Produce Hatchery, which produced hogs and other animals for local marketplaces and export to Sweden. By 1886, Owatonna had become an industrial center with bleach plant, paper mill, and munitions factory among its businesses. In the late 20th century Owatonna experienced rapid growth as a suburb of Minneapolis; however, it has since been shrinking in size due to continuing economic decline and loss of jobs in nearby cities such as Minneapolis-St Paul and St Cloud. Today, most residents live within walking distance of their workplaces or schools; however there are some scattered residences around town. The economy is based largely on agriculture (small amounts of manufacturing also exist), but there are also some services (such as funeral home) that contribute to local commerce. There are several places where you can find artifacts from Owatonna's history including: Owatonna Municipal Building - This building was built in 1907 as part of a courthouse expansion project overseen by Mayor John Mohawk and City Councilman George MacDonaldson. It served as both municipal hall until 1990 when it was replaced by what is now the city's library system office building adjacent steps away from County Courthouse Annex on Fifth Street North. A replica of one room from Mayor Mohawk's original courthouse construction remains inside the Municipal Building today (CITY HISTORY MEMORIAL NUMBER: 8). Archives Annex - This annex housed various archives related to town government during its early years including community records file #2 which contains copies of all Town Meeting minutes dating back to 1854-1855 inclusive (HISTORY NUMDER: 11). Museum Branch Library - This branch opened in 1978 adjacent to the former Paper Mill property on Sixth Street South across from First United Methodist Church (HISTORY NUMBER: 12). It replaced an earlier library which burned down in 1967 while under construction behind present day First United Methodist Church building on Sixth Street South across from IMAX theater complex owned by Coca Cola Refreshments Co., Inc.. Also located here were two substantial brick warehouses that were used for storage/processing raw materials used during construction phases of this large multi-building project...
