Otsego is a town in Otsego County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 961 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Otsego County was James Weir in 1854. Other early settlers were John and Mary Newmark, Abram Brown, Charles Hagedorn and others. The first school was built in Otsego in 1857 by James Weir and it taught school until 1896 when a new school building was erected on the site of present day Middle School which served as the town's public schools from 1896 to 2002. In 1865, Peter Hesselman moved his family from Lismore Township to what is now Otsego County and platted the land that would become Otsego Township. In 1871, David Hecker bought land east of present day Middle School from Peter Hesselman for $100 cash and built a log cabin there which he named "Hesselmans". David Hecker also owned an acre (2/3) north of where Middle School currently stands for over 100 years until it was sold to current owner Donny Kapp about 2006 who has been restoring it as a private home since then with much fanfare! In 1878, William Buehler purchased 2/3rds of township land south of present day Second Street from David Hecker for $200 cash which he used to build a house on today's First Street corner just south of Third Street known as "Buehler House". From this location Buehler could see both sides of Second Street where later today's Old Main street meets Third Street! That same year saw another addition to the community when Job Sager bought 1/3rds of township land west of present day Third Street from William Buehler for $150 cash which he used to build his own house still standing today on O'Neill Road just northwest corner thirdfrompresentdayMainStreet! This second property purchase added much needed housing development within boundaries established at that time! From these two purchases by Mr. Buehler we can date back almost 50 years without ever having had any controversy or question surrounding their legality or appropriateness...just like our founders did back then! Today we continue this long lineage offudy with our newest addition - Mrs. Donna Kapp who donated her large lot located just northeast corner 3rdfrompresentday MainStreet along with some adjoining parcels including; . Her donation allows us immediate expansion onto approximately 4 acres +/- making us one very big step closer towards becoming an official 'town'. Plus her donations go far beyond simply donating property - she has generously given away countless hours tutoring children during afternoons & evenings creating valuable infrastructure & relationships within our community precincts; truly making life easier for all involved!!!
