Otsego is a town in Otsego County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. The community has been founded by Norwegian immigrants in the 1860s. It became a city in 1907 and again in 1912. The first settlers of what would become Otsego were Norwegian immigrants who arrived in 1858. They started out trading goods with the Dakota people and later built several homes near the Little Big Horn River. By 1862, they had gathered enough supplies to build a small fortification on their land which they named Fort Snelling after Major John Snelling, one of their leaders. In 1863, the Ottomans surrendered at Little Big Horn and this event marked the end of hostilities between Norway and Russia for about five years. As time passed, more Norwegians began to arrive in the area and soon there were over 100 residents living hereabouts. Many of these immigrants came from Sogn og Fjordane County where heavy farming activity was taking place at that time due to ample rainfall and fertile soils. Eventually, many farmers decided to move their operations westward into Otsego County because of its better climate as well as access to markets for their produce than eastward into Dakota Territory.(1) In 1907, Otsego became a city when it amalgamated with neighboring Alexandria Township (now Alexandria-Rochester City). At that time it had 2,000 inhabitants; however by 1912 it had grown larger to 4,000 residents(2). The growth of Otsego was largely due to two factors: First was an increase in industry which took hold during World War I; second was an influx of Scandinavian women who desired new opportunities within American society(3). Today much of what made OtseGO so vibrant continues on through its economy as various businesses operate downtown including restaurants/cafes/bars/theaters etc..
