Otsego, Minnesota is a small town in the heart of Minnesota's Upper Peninsula. The population was 1,483 at the 2010 census. Otsego has been inhabited for over 350 years and is one of the oldest continuously occupied towns in Minnesota. It is located on the banks of the Missouri River and serves as an agricultural center for much of northwesternMinnesota. The first settlers to reach Otsego were farmers who came from central Wisconsin in 1846. They built log cabins and started a family business raising chickens, pigs, cows, and horses. By 1870, they had developed a large fruit orchard that produced apples, onions, celery, potatoes, cornmeal cereal products and other items such as flour and butter. In 1881 they began shipping produce to cities in northern Minnesota and southern Michigan. In 1913 they erected their first schoolhouse which served until 1966 when a new building was erected on the original site. The community grew rapidly during World War II with many residents serving in the armed forces; however it slowly declined after the war ended. After 1990s economic declines it experienced rapid growth with waves of immigrants coming to work in agriculture including refugees from wars in central Asia and Africa who were displaced by those conflicts. Since 2000s there has been significant gentrification with some longtime residents moving away for better paying jobs outside Otsego Otsego is located at (45.*10**-5), about halfway upriver from Minneapolis on County Road 10W (SR 9W). It lies on high ground between rolling hills near Big Lake below which flow swift water riverside channels filled with fishponds surrounded by extensive forests minutes walk from home; within walking distance are several grocery stores plus two churches: First United Methodist Church (built 1907) & Second Presbyterian Church (built 1925). On December 15th 1860 John Noyes moved his family here from Ionia Township just east of Winnipeg via steamboat loadingsome 160 passengers along with their herds of cattle & hogs across ice packaded prairies then walked 14 miles through extreme cold conditions w/26 degree wind chill took 4 days getting here aided only by light rain most roads would have frozen shut had not Spring sprung that year giving way to Wheat sheaves growing 3 feet tall

Today, Otsego is a thriving community with a rich history. The first settlers to arrive in Otsego were the Ottawas, who arrived in 1854. The town was named for General George Armstrong Custer, who fought against the Sioux during the American Civil War. early settler John Sibley built his house on what is now Main Street. In 1865, another group of Ottawas established themselves at what is now Strongsville after moving from their original village on the edge of town. In 1870, two brothers named Jens and Ole Hanson moved into Otsego from White Earth Nation and started a grocery store that would become one of Otsego's largest businesses. The Hansons were major players in local politics and helped bring about several important changes in Otsego's history including becoming one of the first communities to have its own school system (1872). In addition to their stores, Jens and Ole also operated an ice cream parlor and tavern which remain operational today as part of the town's cultural heritage. After years of growth and development, it wasn't until 1908 that Otsegos saw its golden age when it became one of the first communities to establish itself as an agricultural center within Minnesota. With this growth came new housing developments such asthe Hanson House (now called 'The Ville'), which was constructed on land donated by John Sibley in 1907;and later additions like The Lighthouse (now known as 'The Crest') which were built between 1912-1914 on land donated by Fred Tilton after he purchased shares in Pioneer Dairy Company. This period also saw significant progress for education within Otsego with three primary schools opening up: Harvester School (1910), Cook County High School (1920), and Community College Technical Institute (CCCTI) opened up shopin 1922 following merger between Hennepin County Technical Institute(HCTI)and Minneapolis-St Paul Collegiate Institute(MPCI). All three schools continue to operate today as part of MNIST’s Colleges & Universities program providing quality education opportunities for students acrossMinnesota
