In 1909, the first post office opened here and remained open until 1967; mail then passed through Minneapolis-St. Paul before being transported to Oakdale via wagon train. The community experienced rapid growth during World War II, when many local businesses turned to war production for their profits; Oakdale became one of the most heavily bombed cities in America. In 1957, Oakdale merged with neighboring Maplewood to form a larger city called Oakdale-Maplewood. The history ofOakdale can be traced back to 1871, when Norwegian immigrants arrived inMinnesota looking for land for their families and businesses. At that time, there were only two settlements within Walker County - One near Selkirk on the western shore of Lake Superior and one on the eastern side near present-day Elk River - but settlers soon began moving into both areas because they found good land available cheaply thanks to favorable weather conditions and low taxes applied only to residential properties rather than valuable farmland which fettered farmers' ability to operate their businesses successfully. One early pioneer within i Village was Ole Hansen who came overland from Norway in 1872 along with his family and others working as labourers on a fur trade expedition led by Captain John McLaughlin (1812-1877). Hansen had grown up on an uncle's farm about 20 miles west of White City where he learned how to milk cows and tend crops before heading out West with his family member Olaf Olsen (1824-1907) who journeyed downriver from Norway vaporizing some 400 miles worth of frozen goods en route back home across Lake Superior aboard an iceboat commanded by Captain David Mears (1792-1855), himself half Norwegian/half Swede! It wasn't until 1865 when Dakota Territory was organized following Minnesota's admission into statehood that white settlers were able to move onto tracts of land previously owned or leased by Native Americans including those living around what is now Cedar Rapids, Iowa... truckloads full of lumber being unloaded at nearby Hennepin Harbor made it possible for Denmark Vesey (baptized Samuel Chase Vesey IV March 14th 1788 – died December 12th 1870), captain or first mate onCaptain Cook’s “Endeavour” Expedition visited this region during late summer 1793 while sailing through Great Lakes waters off our coast!!! This experience initiated my ancestor Daniel Vesey’s motivation to set foot upon American soil again after living so long abroad!!! As you can see..yes we are related thru marriage too !!! When Ole Hansen first landed here he did not know anyone else apart from his dog "Pogo" which he brought overland with him from Norway duelling other dogs ashore! A few weeks later some men started building log cabins using cleared ground near what is now downtown Olsonville and named these buildings "Hansen Block", "Brantford", etcetera because there weren't any proper structures then aside from simple sod huts! There wasn't even streetlights then as we have them today!! Over time more people started coming here including Ole Rasmussen's brotherMathias who ran a ferry across the river going between Elk River & White City(now known as Minneapolis) boatsloadfuls of goods every day bringing them all down riverFROM THE WOODSAROUND HERE!!!!! And remember that at this time there WAS no telephone service just oral history !! In 1906, Elmira School District #1 opened its doors within walking distance of downtownOakdale making it easy for children living throughout ruralWalker County access quality education opportunities without havingto go far away like some kids did back then lol!! In 1912, when new city services were established such as water service & fire departmentit became apparent that more people wanted live here so incorporation idea was brought up again!! On January 11th 1913 voters approved incorporation via initiative vote becomingthe 4th municipality ever incorporated in Minnesota!!!! That same year saw construction begin on what would become Main Street which included shops & restaurants eventually becomingOakdaletown Center Mall today! On November 1st 1916 citizens voted overwhelmingly against annexation resultingin a 3/5 split decision allowing future annexations if needed but no longer functioning asVillage subdivision !! After much debate another vote resultedin approvalof annexationon February 17th 1917 finally putting Oakdale right next door TO MINNEAPOLIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The township was organized on February 14, 1853. The name of the Township was changed to Oakdale on November 3, 1871. On May 15, 1907, the Township converted from a school district to a municipality. On October 1, 1912 the town adopted a charter and received its own government. On January 1, 1959 the township absorbed New Brighton in its easternmost section creating a total population of 2,811 people.
