Oakdale, Minnesota is a small town in the heart of the Great Lakes region. The community was founded in 1852 as a Methodist Episcopal Church settlement on what is now Oakdale Road. It was named for John D. Oakley, who had donated land to the church and helped with itsearly construction. The first scopes were built here in the early 1800s by J.B. Caldwell, an American pioneer settler who founded what is now Clearwater Township in upstate New York County. He used his large farmstead as a testing ground for new designs and found that he could improve upon earlier models using better optics and more modern technology. In 1856, Samuel Colt began production of firearms in this area and soon discovered that he could make excellent rifles using local pine lumber which was plentiful hereabouts due to the climate's favourable conditions for growth and forestry. One of Oakdale's most famous residents was Julius Caesar Augustus Schaefer, also known as "Dracula". Born into a wealthy family near Frankfurt am Main, Germany, Schaefer emigrated to America at age 15 before going on to become one ofthe most influential people associated with American cinema during its heyday (mid-19th century). He used this expensive instrument to study everything from space weather phenomena to planets orbiting around other stars!
