This railroad provided transportation for goods between Duluth and St Cloud during World War I and also connected these communities with other parts ofMinnesota including Superior, Apple Valley, Morris Heights, Richfield Park, White Earth Falls, Brooklyn Park, Maple Grove and Elk River.[1] In 1923, a fire destroyed much of Maple Grove which had been abandoned by its original inhabitants due to drought conditions that year. The town's first school opened in 1925 (the present day elementary school) which helped revitalize the community after that year's firestorm that destroyed much of Maple Grove also Editie park near where it now stands became an important destination for residents looking for entertainment during those early years following Hazel Richard's establishment as Manager/Owner - later known as First National Bank - at what would become what is today known as Hennepin Avenue & Third Street corner about 1922 – just east off Interstate 35W on Third Street., capitalized then spelled "Hazel Richard". The store building still stands there on Hennipin Avenue facing Third Street (and used briefly by Sears beginning in 1975 until they moved out). Hazel Richard sold her interest in First National Bank to Nelson Peake Jr./Pepco Trust Co effective 3/1/1925 but continued to operate both stores until her death on 11/16/1945 age 81 years old – one week shy of her 89th birthday! After she passed away local citizens formed their own group called "Hazel Richards Association" with vision to redevelop Hazel Richards land into new housing developments; planning spanned 5 decades starting with aerial surveys conducted by private individuals prior to founding Ofcra when city acquired density restrictions preventing building heights above 40 feet
