Oakdale is a town in Dodge County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. The community is located on the north side of Dodge County and east of Minneapolis. The first settler in what would become Oakdale was Andrew McDonald who arrived there in 1856. McDonald named the land "Oakdale" after his father's old farm near Detroit, Michigan. In 1857, settlers Fenton and Dibble brought over a sawmill from Canada and began to operate it. The millstream ran through Oakdale until 1915 when it was replaced by a powerline. In 1861, Alexander Smeaton built a cabin on the east side of town which he called "Smeaton's Grove". By 1865, John Ahern had erected a log house which served as the first post office in what would become Oakdale. In 1867, McNeely bought land west of town from Smeaton for $500 and started to building houses there. McNeely became one of the most prominent citizens of Oakdale and was instrumental in helping to develop the community into what it is today. In 1898, Jens Christensen purchased 8 acres (3 hectares) west of town from McNeely for $1,000. He donated that plot to Elmwood Cemetery where it still stands today.In 1903-5 Mrs. Anna Norris made an addition to her home at 6263 Hoyt Avenue (now 2nd Street) which served as her kitchen and living quarters until 1978 when she sold them to Mr./Mrs.- Edith Goudreau. Mrs.. Norris also added several other buildings on her property including two stone barns< ref >(now part of First Baptist Church)< ref >and< ref >a garage.< cf >The early days were difficult for women back then so Mrs... Norris did whatever she could do make life easier especially since she wasn't able to vote.

Oakdale became a city in 1907 and was renamed to its current name, Oakdale on February 3, 1916. The population of the City of Oakdale was 21,811 as of the 2010 census. The oldest part of the town is located near the present day downtown area. The first settlement here was made up of families who had fled religious persecution in Russia during the time of czar Nicholas II. They arrived in 1854 and built a log cabin on an open piece of land that they named “Oakdale” after their Canadian home village, Oakville. Some other early pioneers were John Kapp and his brother Rasmus who came overland from Sweden in a wagon train and started to clear land around what is now downtown Oakdale about one year later than most others because they had connections with several wealthy individuals in Vail Valley at that time. By 1860, much of what is now downtown had been cleared and there were only scattered houses scattered around what are today Maple Street (northwest corner), 2nd Street (southwest corner), 4th Street (southeast corner), 5th Avenue (east side), 6th Avenue (north side) and 7th Avenue (south side). At this point people went about their daily lives but did not build permanent homes until later when proper transportation became available for them including wagons drawn by horses or buggies across rough country roads which would then be bridged by logs or plank bridges crossing rivers or lakes
