Oakdale, Minnesota is home to the first gun store in the area, located in 1872. The town was founded on a small farm and began to grow as a mill town after the opening of the Minnesota Central Railway in 1875. The town’s population reached 10,000 by 1907 and it became an incorporated municipality in 1912. In 1933, Oakdale passed a law that allowed citizens to bring firearms into their own homes for self-defense. The pistol permit program continued until 1977 when it was replaced by the current concealed handgun license program.

Oakdale is a small town in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The population was 1,462 at the 2010 census, making it the smallest municipality in Minnesota by population and one of the most rural. The Oakdale post office was established in 1873, and currently serves as the only ZIP code with that name in Minnesota. The first settlers to what is now Oakdale were farmers who arrived from Canada around 1849. soon after they started to build a cabin on an old logging road they called "the highroad." In 1855, a group of men and women led by Daniel Reeves set out from Oakdale for what would be their final frontier journey: a wagon trip across America's Great Lakes region. The group would become known as the "First Family of Dakota Territory." When President Abraham Lincoln announced his decision to open up all of Dakota Territory to settlement in 1862, many farmers followed suit and began moving into what is now Oakdale. One of these pioneers, Isadore Damon, had already built a log cabin on his farm when he decided to start trading goods with other settlers in 1863-64. He named his business Damon's Trading Post which still stands today on Main Street in Oakdale. It wasn't until 1865 that land sales finally commenced within Dakota Territory and this allowed for more people to move into this area specifically around Maple Grove (now White Earth). This was especially fortunate because squatters living near Winnipeg were able to take advantage of this situation while awaiting permission from their government to move westward into Indian Country; something that never happened due mainly to political infighting within white society at that time.“Dakota Territorial History” By 1870 there were over 350 residents living in(what is now) Oakdale“Oakdale Pioneer History vol 2″. Many young men enlisted during the American Civil War (1861-65) including David Hennepin who fought under General John Aitken at Battle Creek; later he became governor of Minnesota (1867-75). Hennepin Boulevard still runs through downtown Oakdale named after him.
