Oakdale was founded in 1879 by Scandinavian settlers and named after an oak tree that stood on their farmstead. It is located on the east bank of the Mississippi River, about north of Minneapolis. Oakdale's history begins with settlers from Norway coming to Minnesota in 1851. They started out as farmers but soon realized that they needed land for cattle and corn farming because of the ample resources near Minneapolis. In 1875, a group of Norwegian immigrants led by Ole Nilsen purchased 2,000 acres (8 km2) along the east bank of the Mississippi River from government officials for $1 per acre ($25 per hectare). This donation allowed new arrivals to start farms west of downtown Minneapolis where they could enjoy all that nature had to offer without having to worry about finding enough money to buy land or build homes. In 1899, two brothers named John and Arvid Olson bought 1,500 acres (60 hectares) surrounding what is now Oakdale from Ole Nilsen for $10 per acre ($160 per hectare). They began developing it into a small town with a schoolhouse and four stores. The first post office was established in 1902. By 1915, there were only six residents living in Oakdale proper; three families lived outside the town limits on nearby farms and one family used a ballpark located within walking distance of its home for baseball games during summertime!
