Oakdale was founded in 1852 by John and Margaret Oakdale. The first store was a one-room log cabin. The town grew quickly, and in 1875 it built its first school, which still stands today. In 1907, the town voted to incorporate as a city. Growth continued, and by 1925 the city had a population of over 1,000 people. In the early 1960s, Oakdale experienced growth due to the opening of Interstate 94. traffic increased so much that many businesses closed or moved out of their original locations because they could not handle the increase in traffic. As a result of this growth, many new buildings were constructed on Main Street including City Hall and the Municipal Building. In November 2001, voters passed an ordinance that repealed portions of the canals system that had been in place for decades and allowed development along both sides of I-94 near downtown Oakdale. This development has led to increased business activity on Main Street as properties now have more room to develop without having to worry about high traffic levels.
