By 1792, powder had become available enough for artillery use – making cannons more effective at attacking enemies – but it took until 1814 before rifle barrels could hold enough powder to make effective shots at close range (1). With so much combat happening outside of Philadelphia during this time period, rifles were not yet able to meet demand for cannon fodder (2). So while cannons continued serving as common battlefield weapons throughout most of American history (3), pistols began taking over as primary armaments due à their increased accuracy and lethality (4). This change happened gradually across all armies over time as technology advanced; however, with guns becoming ever more powerful with each new weapon development cycle came an increase in ammo requirements (5).
