In 1826, Ulysses S Grant visited the area and recommended it for settlement by Americans due to its proximity to Superior and Hastings counties. The first settler was John Wiley who arrived on a horse wagon on February 14, 1827 from Illinois. A school was established in what is now Northfield in 1830 by Revs Jesse Hinton and James Witherspoon with help from Peter Kappelman and others. A post office called Northfield wasestablished on November 12, 1830 by Samuel Baird with one dollar gift from John Wiley. In 1837, landwas purchased near present day downtown Northfieldfrom David Thompson for $5 per acre ($40 per lot). George Brown built his mill on this site; it became an important center for local production of flour and other goods until it closed around 1920%. The town began to grow rapidly when new roads were constructed eastward from Minneapolis during the late 19th century; many residents moved into newly developed neighborhoods west of downtown during this time. In 1907–1909, more than 1,000 students took part in a 10-day conference organized by Bishop Jens Andersen at nearby Hastings College which aimed to improve relations between Protestant denominations in America During World War I (1914–18), employment at the plant increased as munitions Factories Committee member George Swanson worked here; however when production ceased due to enemy bombing raids he lost his job but continued working until he retired four years later The NorthFIELD Bowl game halftime show has been held every year since 2002 except 2009.2009 In 2006 plans were made for a new stadium which would have seated up to 80,000 people although no progress has been made since then
