Northfield is a small town in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. Northfield is located on the east side of the Mississippi River and is bordered by the city of Minneapolis to its north and west, West Bloomfield Township to its south and east, and Clearwater Township to its southeast. The first settler in what became Northfield was John Nissen in 1855. A post office called Northfield was established in 1857, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902. The townsite that now encompasses Northfield was platted in 1863 by Elisha Stevens; it took name from a farmstead near missesaukee which had been his home since he left New York City for Minnesota some years before that. George Hennepin laid out a road through what are now parts of West Bloomfield Township on December 2, 1865; this road became known as "Nissen Road". The first store opened at present day First National Bank (now Wells Fargo) on July 10th 1870 - just four weeks after incorporation by Samuel Prentice & Company as "Prentice's Store". In 1886 a large dam was built across the Mississippi River at what is now Crystal Lake; water diverted from this lake flowed into Duluth to power turbines used for electrical generation until 1957 when an electric power plant replaced these turbines. This event helped spur development around Crystal Lake with such names as "Crystal Lake Heights", "Lakeview", etc.; today most of these developments are gone but some still stand including Crystal Lakeside Resort Resort which offers swimming, golfing and tennis among other activities.. In 1916 local farmers organized a grain storage company to purchase land along both sides of the river for storage; this company remains active today with over 20 acres currently stored under various names including: Central Grain Storage Co., Grand Rapids Elevated Storage Co., South Dakota Grain Storage Co., Dakota Grain Storage Co., Sioux City Elevated Storage & Marketing Corp., Sioux Falls ElevatedStorageCo Inc., Eastern Illinois ElevatedStorageCorp Inc,, Western Illinois ElevatedStorageCorp Inc.. On November 25th 1941 World War II began with Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor; within days American forces were mobilizing along the eastern shore of Minnesota; herein lies one reason why industry flourished during wartime while other sectors such as agriculture cratered: because war required not only production but also transportation infrastructure which could be employed In particular railroading capacity became critical given distances between cities/states/millets etc.; accordingly much NorthernMinnesota industrial real estate sprung up along new railroad lines providing jobsites for thousands soon after WWII ended Although many factories closed their doors throughout postwar America they did so largely because there simply wasn't enough demand for their products outside wartime America whereas manufacturing elsewhere continued apace despite difficult times thanks partly to immigration
