Mr. Stevens became known for his excellent shooting ability and he donated many of his targets to the townspeople as a way to help promote local shooting contests and activities. In 1915, George Weigel set up shop on West Seventh Avenue in Northfield and soon began offering hunting and Sporting Clays targets to customers throughout the city. In 1928, Weigel’s son Harry started doing business under the name “George Weigel & Sons” and continued providing high-quality targets until 1978 when it merged with another company to become Dark Horse Shooting Park Incorporated (DHPS). DHPS continues to offer hunting and sporting clays targets today, making Northfield one of the most active target markets in Minnesota. The town was named for John Northfield, an early settler and father of one of its citizens. In 1876, Northfield became a city when it was incorporated as a result of an act of the Minnesota Legislature. The city changed its name to Northfield again in 1984 after voters approved a proposition to change its name to honor local dignitaries who had made significant contributions to the community or country including Governor Magnuson and General Nelson Auerbach. In recent years Northfield has become known for its annual apple festival which draws attention to local agriculture and food production throughout Minnesota and beyond
The Northfield area was first settled by the Menominee in 1837. The town was named for Lieutenant Colonel Samuel North, a Revolutionary War veteran and fur trader. The first post office in the town was established in 1839. In 1846, the village of Northfield merged with the towns of Hermantown and Silver Lake to form the city of Northfield. In 1871, the city name was changed to Minneapolis after Mayor John Nicolay and Councilman Nicholas Wirth became its first leaders. In 1899, Minneapolis annexed part of St. Pauls west side which formed what is now Hennepin County. On July 1, 1907, Minneapolis incorporated as a city and since then has grown rapidly becoming one of America's largest metropolitan areas.
