He and his wife built a cabin on a hill near present-day Northridge Elementary School. The city of Minneapolis was founded around this time and Stevens saw it as an opportunity to move his family closer to civilization. He sent word back home that he had found land for sale about four miles away from their cabin, and within three years he had bought two thousand acres of forested land that would become Northfield. Northfield’s economy has always been based on agriculture and manufacturing; its primary industries have been farming, forestry, hunting, transportation (including a railroad), and cottage industry since its founding. Today Northfield’s economy largely relies on services such as health care, education, recreation (including shopping malls), retail trade, and business travel; however some businesses do still operate in local restaurants or small shops. The City of NorthFIELD was created by merging several villages which surrounded it when it was formed following annexation by Southdale Township on October 15th 1957: Apple Valley Village (1957), East Moline Village (1965), Galesburg Village (1966), Hilbert/Northridge Villages Joint Powers Authority 1961(!), Maple Leaf ManorVillage 1966(?), White Earth Manorvillage 1978(?), Unadilla Manorvillage 1987(?).

Northfield, Minnesota is a town in Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. Northfield was founded in 1853 and named for the northward-pointing hill that served as its first post office. Northfield is located in the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. Northfield is one of the oldest towns in Hennepin County and has been mentioned in various publications dating back to 1853. It was originally a part of what was called Dakota Territory and were considered Sioux Nation land until 1862 when they were given their own government by General Alfred Prentice Johnson and became known as the Sioux Nation of Northfield. The first settler in Northfield may have been Isaac Higbee who built a cabin on what is now east side of Main Street about 1854 or so. Ida Sollenberger also lived hereabouts from 1855-57 before moving to Stopher, Manitoba due to her sister's death there during childbirth some years earlier (1852). There are no records of any other settlers until 1860 when Abram Brown arrived from Ohio with his family and began farming around present day First Avenue south of Center Street which he named after himself – Abram Prairie near where Brown's house still stands today! In 1865 Abraham Brown married Lydia Howe who had also come overland from Missouri via Illinois some time earlier that year! She had met him while working on an ox team travelling through Iowa during the summer months! They soon had 6 children: Anna (baptized December 12th 1865), John (January 15th 1870 – died young; son of Abram Prairie), Lydia (March 14th 1872 – died young; daughter of Abram Prairie), William (October 10th 1876 – born October 25th 1880), Nancie Ewing Mayo (December 15th 1888)and Quincey Aiken Mayo (February 4th 1890). This would be the beginningof one major family dynasty within this small town! In fact Quincey Aiken Mayo would later become governor of Minnesota under Grover Cleveland! It wasn't until 1886 when THE FIRST BUSINESS IN NORTHFIELD WAS OPENED WHEN THE NORTHFIELD BUSINESS COOPERATIVE WAS ESTABLISHED! This business actually started out as a general store but soon grew into becoming one of the most successful businesses in town because it carried goods for all sorts of people including farmers, traders, mechanics etc… It continued to operate successfully until it burned down in 1924!!! That pretty much ended forever any hopes anyone may have harbored for this venerable business….. However ALL OF THE SOUTHERN NEW YORK TIMES MEDIA SERVICES THAT YEAR WERE LOCATED HERE IN NORTHFIELD WITH THEIR HEADQUARTERS AT 515 Main Street FOR ABOUT TWO YEARS BEFORE THEY BECAME TOWARDS SUFFICIENTLY MILLION DOLLARS LANDING ON THE COMPANY TO MAKE IT OFFICIALLY AN OFFICIAL MINNESOTA BUSINESS!!! Reverend George Fenton officiated at its reopening ceremonies!! However things did not stay quiet at THIS BUSINESS COOPERATIVE FOR LONG AS OTHER STORIES OF ITS DAY began trickle down like cold water onto a hot fire…. Eventually others would take up shop nearby such as Anson Mills which opened up just east off Main Street opposite Pastor’s Chapel next door( March 1886)….. Then around 1907 came another store built by Hiram Percy Maxim who operated from what is now west side Of Third Avenue just north of Central Avenue(May 1908)- however this store too failed within 3 years due mainly to economic reasons only selling groceries rather than anything else…….. Finally another store open up next door( May 1912) by Byron Dolan which lasted until it burned down too!! Finally we reach our current day location here at 505 Main Street where we continue doing business today making us arguably one of Twin Cities’ most successful small businesses EVER!!!!!!!!!
In 1847, Northfield was founded as a town in Dakota Territory. The first settler, John S. Nordheimer, arrived in 1849 and began farming the land that would become Northfield. In 1862, the United States acquired Minnesota from Mexico and formed it into a U.S. state. Northfield became part of the new state and continued to grow until 1907 when it was annexed by Minneapolis.
