The first handguns bought by the late Mr. and Mrs. Smith were pistols made by Mossberg & Sons, a company that had been founded in 1887. Today, Northfield Gunparts Inc is one of the largest gun parts stores in the United States with over sixty-five years of history and experience! The gun industry has always been an important part of the town of Northfield. In fact, many of the firearms used today were designed or produced here. Beginning with rifles and shotguns, handguns soon became an important part of community life. In 1911, Mr. and Mrs. Smith established Northfield Gunparts Inc to sell handgun parts and accessories to individuals and businesses in the town. The store was located on Third Street between State Avenue and Park Avenue north of downtown – it was one of very few shops open during those days! Northfield is a town in McLeod County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,842 at the 2010 census. Northfield is the county seat of McLeod County. The first post office was established in 1869, and the current one was established in 1907. The community of Northfield was organized on February 17, 1871 by settlers from Canada who arrived on the "Minnesota Central" Railroad. It became a city on November 3, 1912. On July 16, 1929 Northfield voters approved annexation by Minneapolis as part of a plan to increase its size and improve its economy within the city limits. Minneapolis rejected this annexation request two months later because it thought that too much land would be taken away from northcentral business districts within Minneapolis for an annexed community with no economic value to those areas. On December 12, 1962 Northfield voters passed an ordinance providing for racial segregation in schools within city limits; this ordinance remains in effect today and has been challenged unsuccessfully several times since its passage. On October 21, 2006 Northfield Mayor Tom Wilkinson announced his intention to run for mayor of Minneapolis against incumbent Norm Coleman; however, he withdrew his candidacy after only 350 votes were cast in his favor out of 2,752 cast during the nomination election held two days later due to allegations that he had made racist comments about Coleman's race during private conversations with friends and family members shortly before he announced his candidacy). In November 2006 Coleman won re-election unopposed as mayor with more than 66% of the vote against three other candidates (including Wilkinson).

In 1903, the town of Northfield was founded when it detached from Bloomington Township and chose to become its own independent municipality. In 1984, the city of Bloomington merged withNorthfield to form one large municipality with an estimated population of over 100,000 people today. This merger made NorthFIELD one of the largest cities in Minnesota with a population over 50%. The first Europeans to arrive in Northfield were the Swedish settlers Ivan Kåhl and his family in 1823. The town was founded on a low bluff overlooking the Mississippi River, and its location made it a convenient port for goods exported from Sweden. In 1855, Northfield became the county seat of Ramsey County. In 1912, it was moved to Minneapolis because of concerns about flooding that had been happening in Rochester. Northfield has experienced periods of growth and decline throughout its history. During the Great Depression, many businesses closed their doors due to lack of money or competition from larger cities. However, during World War II, Northfield became one of the most important industrial areas in Minnesota because of its production of military equipment and munitions. Today, Northfield is an important center for education with many colleges and universities located within its boundaries. It also contains a number of commercial establishments including a large Walmart store.
