Northfield is a city in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 25,521 at the 2010 census. Northfield is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. Northfield is one of the few cities inMinnesota that still has a downtown district and many of its buildings are from the 1820s and 1830s when it was incorporated as a village. The first settler in what would become Northfield was Samuel Merrill who journeyed out from Illinois in 1824 and platted what would become Northfield on land he had acquired from John Davenport. By 1840, there were 11 settlers living in what became Northfield. In 1851, David Ladd purchased 180 acres (72 ha) of land east of town to build a millsite on which he erected two small log cabins known as the Ladd House and Mill Site #1. The first store opened in this mill site on July 1, 1851 by David Ladd and his wife Anna Hennepin with help from their brother-in-law Jacob Goodhue. A post office called "NorthFIELD" was established at this location on October 15, 1850; the name was changed to "Ramsey" on January 1, 1856 due to confusion with nearby Ramsey county seat of St. Cloud which already had an official name (). The first school open in what would become Northfield was taught by Miss Maynard until 1861 when Driggs Schoolhouse became operational followed by Ayer Schoolhouse soon after that until 1922 when both schools merged into Oneida County High School becoming one entity known today as Ramseyside Middle School (). This event happened just across street from present day home field Lacrosse Stadium! In 1912 Nathan Myrick started manufacturing cheese outbuildings west bound Old State Road @Wabasha Avenue which led then onto 2nd Ave Facing South toward Mpls.

Northfield was platted in 1881 and named after the nearby north fork of theMissouri River. The first settlers to what is now Northfield were men from Hyannis, Massachusetts who crossed the border into Canada in 1819 to prospect for natural resources. They founded a small post office called Hudson's Bay Company Post on the banks of the Missouri River in 1824 while they awaited word from home about whether their families could return to America following British occupation of Canada during that year. In 1848, when Congress passed an act authorizing settlement west of Lake Superior, its members awarded land grants to individuals and groups including Andrew Johnson (founder of Johnson County), Alexander Begay (founder of Berryville), John Dickey (founder of Dickey Township), James McMillan (founder of Northfield) and David Thomson ( founder of Thomson Terrace). Northfield was founded in 1855 by John A. North and his brothers, George and Eli. The town grew rapidly due to the abundance of natural resources and the development of railroads. The population reached 1,500 by 1900, but declined as a result of agricultural productivity and prohibition. By 1907, Northfield had shrunk to just 100 people. In the 1930s, a Works Progress Administration project increased the size of the town to 250 people. However, the Depression caused a decline in population until World War II brought new growth. In 1945, Northfield became an incorporated city under state law. The city's economy has been based on manufacturing since its establishment; however, recent years have seen major changes with the emergence of technology as one of its main sources of growth.
