In response to this lack of job opportunities available in their own communities due largely to technology advances having replaced many manual labor tasks performed by miners during this time period,[5] Minnesotans began looking towards other forms of employment such as professional engineering services[6][7][8] although there were still some men working within these fields.[9][10] This led directly to development within early 20th century rural areas adjacent to large coal mining operations[11] into places such as Green Bay and Superior where people worked primarily with their hands building bridges and other infrastructure related projects[12][13], later becoming known collectively among these regions simply as "the Mining Belt".[14][15] This pattern continued throughout the 1920s into the 1930s with men mainly working inside larger mechanized mines while women typically worked at home raising families,[16],[17][/18][/19][/20][/21][/22]'
