Northfield, Minnesota is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The population was 10,737 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hennepin County and has a population of 18,521 as of 2019. Northfield is located in the southern Twin Cities metropolitan area and is bordered by Minneapolis to the north, St. Paul to the east, Bloomington to the south, and Rochester to the west. The city's boundaries encompass a portion of each of Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington metropolitan areas as well as parts of Duluth and Farmington Hills in Michigan. The first Europeans to visit what is now Northfield were French traders who came through this area during 1681–1682 on their way from Montreal to Saint John's Eve (4 September). Captain Pierre Le Moyne Cadillac explored this region early in 1784 when he led an army overland from Quebec City via present-day South Dakota Territory and arrived at what would become Northfield on 17 August that year while exploring for fur traders with his brother Étienne Le Moyne Cadillac under General James Kelson's command across Turtle Lake near modern bluffs northeast of town site today (). In 1851, portions of Hennepin County were organized as Ramsey County; Northfield was not included within that county until 1857 (). In 1872, part or all of Ramsey County was reorganized into Cook County () which became Illinois after its admission into the Union on 1 January 19th – nearly three months after Northfield incorporation date (). On 12 July 1886, a fire destroyed much of downtownHennepinville before starting southwestward towards what would become NorthFIELD () today ().
