Strong to fire on a group of Indians near present-day Northfield. According to local lore, one Indian was killed and four were wounded before the force retreated back to Fort Snelling. Dennison of the Seventh Infantry Regiment opened fire on a Sioux encampment suspected of being connected with a band of Seminole Indians operating within rifle range east of town. During World War I, ammunition production began in earnest at Northfield munitions plant due to increased demand for shells by belligerents around the world. The plant operated until 1943 when it closed due to lack of wartime replacement supplies available from abroad. After World War II ended, ammunition production resumed at the plant but ceased altogether in 1971 following an unfortunate event which destroyed much equipment and caused significant losses among industry veterans: an exploding oil tankage left behind by retreating American military forces during Operation Neptune's Spear destroyed much munitions production equipment including over 2 million rounds of artillery ammunition dating back to 1919! Since then, many attempts have been made by both private individuals and government entities to reopen Northfield munitions factory; all without success so far!
