North St. Paul, Minnesota is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The population was 14,878 at the 2010 census, making it the ninth-largest city in Minnesota and the second-largest in its rural area. North St. Paul is located near metropolitan Minneapolis and Saint Paul on the north side of Lake Superior at its southernmost point. The town of Oshkosh was founded by Hudson's Bay Company employees in 1837 as a trading post on the upper Mississippi River for buffalo hunts and other goods shipped downriver from Canada to Great Lakes ports such as Detroit and Milwaukee. By 1854, when it became part of Dakota Territory, Oshkosh had become one of the most important centers for Sioux traders and soldiers during Indian Wars between 1862 and 1876. The company abandoned Oshkosh in 1865 but continued to provide access to water supplies, transportation, education, commerce, industry (including leather tanning), firewood, lumber and other resources until it merged with several others under United States General Electric Company ownership in 1913 into GEICO Corporation. During World War II North St. Paul played an important role as an airfield providing support for Allied forces bombing enemy targets within Germany and Austria before they were liberated by American forces; also during this time many residents worked at GEICO’s munitions plants manufacturing ball bearings, munitions components such as bombsight lenses and detonators., steel foundries which made high-quality cannons used by Union troops during the Civil War; ammunition production facilities being built adjacent to both military installations produced shells for everything from artillery pieces to tanks; even a small number of homes were built specifically for workers at these factories who needed close access to amenities such as bathrooms/ kitchens/heat sources etc.; however there are few traces remaining today that once housed workers or sustained those industries over more than a decade or two primarily because they stopped producing products after World War II ended without any major economic impact or change to local demographics whatsoever… In short while some evidence remains today that past businesses may have been sustainably operated thanks largely to proximity to natural resources including lakeshore shoreline views (albeit minimally) active recreation opportunities are much less evident due largely either TO THE LACK OF PRESERVATION OR REGULATIONS FROM STATE AND CITY GOVERNMENTS RESPECTING FUTURE BUSINESS OPERATIONS…. nonetheless I believe that if we visit North StPaul today 10 years from now we would not recognize much about what exists except perhaps some restored buildings dating back to pre-war days when GEICO still functioned [emphasis added].
