North St. Paul, Minnesota is a town in Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 10,887 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St.Paul metropolitan area. The name "North" derives from the fact that it is north of downtown Minneapolis and east of Bloomington. "St. Paul" may come from Scandinavian Lutheran pioneers who settled there in 1849, or from Saint Paul's Cathedral in Copenhagen which became the largest European cathedral outside Europe after its construction in 1850. The first post office was established in North St. Paul on July 2,1854 by Jens Andersen and Jacob Bergman with a mailing address of "Old Fort". A new post office was built on May 30, 1855 by John Wessels with a mailing address of "East Side". The first store building opened on October 6, 1859 at 242 First Street (now Eighth Avenue). On November 15th 1889 North St. Paul voters passed an ordinance creating a school district including all present day Hennepin County except for Farmers Branch and medically unfit portions of Guthrie and Ramsey counties as well as parts of Elk River Township west of State Highway 82 (now Interstate 5) to form what would become the second largest school district in Minnesota behind only Minneapolis-SaintPaul School District #2 which had 14 schools when incorporation occurred; this move allowed for open enrollment into public Schools across Hennepin County regardless of residency status On January 1st 1902 North St .Petersburg incorporated into what would become Hennepin County In 1907 Third Avenue became Main Street making it one block wide making it possible for businesses to open onto both streets rather than just one side Finally on December 4th 1912 North St .Petersburg annexed Watertown adding 3 blocks south along Main street to their already large city limits
