North St. Paul, Minnesota is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota and the county seat of Ramsey County. In 1865, a group of Dutch farmers founded a town called Bad Homburg am Neckar (Bad Hamburg) within present-day Ramsey County[3]. This community became known as North Dakota because it lay along the then newly completed Dakota Trail which linked Omaha, Nebraska with Winnipeg, Manitoba across Canada[4]. In 1870, two groups of Swedes settled at what is now First Avenue N., east of downtown North St. Paul[5]: one group under leadership of Captain Svante Arvidsson (1827–1900), based at Fort Snelling; and another led by Gustaf Nordlander (1826–1901), based at Stillwater Creek [6], both settling northward from where they had come earlier that year on land donated by Governor Edwin Smith[7]. The arrival of railroads and other transportation Improvements during this time increased trade between northeastern United States and rapidly growing Canada,[8] giving rise to new businesses such as flour mills and wagon workshops near today’s First Avenue N., northwest corner of University Boulevard W., northeast corner of Ballantyne Boulevard W., northeast corner on Superior Street E., southeast corner on Nicollet Ave.[9][10] These businesses quickly developed into large towns with their own banks, churches, schools and newspapers – all integral parts of local life for hundreds if not thousands OF years until surpassed only recently by larger metropolitan areas across America which continue to dominate today’s economies! North St. Paul is a small town located in the U.S. state of Minnesota. It was founded in 1858 and has been the seat of government for the city of Minneapolis since 1902. North St. Paul is bordered by Minneapolis to the north, Apple Valley to the east, Falcon Heights to the south, and Maplewood to the west. The population of North St. Paul was 21,836 as of 2013[1]. The town began as a small farming community on Lake Minnetonka and was later renamed after General John A. Richardson who served as governor of Minnesota from 1858-1859 and 1861-1865. Richardson's tomb can be seen at Mount Rushmore National Monument in South Dakota near his home ranch where he died in 1865 at age 72 years old while serving as governor of Minnesota during one of its most tumultuous periods. In 1902, when Minneapolis became an incorporated city, North St.Paul became its second city seat with citizens voting on a new city charter which granted it more autonomy than what had been given to Minneapolis until then under its original incorporation ordinance from 1855-1857 which limited it to being within 2 miles (3 km) of downtown Minneapolis.[2] In 1945, when North SaintPaul amalgamated with other nearby towns including Apple Valley and Falcon Heights into one municipality known as Minneapolis/St petersburg through an act approved by the state legislature,[3][4][5] North St.Paul Municipal Airport remained its primary airport providing passenger services until 2000 when that airport was closed following United Airlines' merger with Northwest Airlines.[6][7] As part of this merger, United Airlines transferred all their operations out East Side Terminal 5 located adjacent to Terminal 6 (now Target Field) in downtown Minneapolis which resulted in greatly reduced air traffic heading into/out of downtown MN each day due to much smaller skies than before). This gave rise to local nickname "Thedepths":[8][9][10] because large sections(northwest side)of MN were without airspace or service from any major carrier except for US AirwaysExpress flights operated by Republic Airways Corporation 737s using parts available at Target Field[11]-[14]. Today many residents still call themselves "Minnesotans" because they feel connectedness with their home state regardless if they live outside metro area now or inside it when they were first born there over 100 years ago!
In 1836, North St. Paul was the location of a smallpox quarantine station. The town's first physician,Dr. John Goodridge, served as the quarantine officer at this station. In 1840, North St. Paul became a part of the United States and its first capital was established here. The population of North St.Paul grew rapidly after it became an American city and in 1854 it had over 100 residents. The first public school in North St.Paul was built in 1853 and students from all around the city attended this school until 1902 when it was abolished and replaced by a high school which still operates today under the name "North Star". In 1861, Minnesota statehood was granted to Minnesota and North St.Paul became its new state capital; however, due to its small size compared to other major cities in the state, it did not receive any financial aid from the federal government during its time as capital; however, it continued to be used as the seat of government for both Minnesota and Canada until 1899 when Toronto became their new capital pursuant to newly ratified U.S.-Canada Treaty No 1 (1899).
