The history of airguns in North St. Paul, Minnesota goes back to the early 1800s. The first documented use of an airgun in this area was in 1827 when a man named John Prentice used a muzzleloader to shoot at pigeons. In 1851, A.J. Fenton opened the first local gun shop in North St. Paul and began selling airguns as well as pistols and shotguns. By 1865, there were several licensed gun dealers in town and over 120 rifles, shotguns, pistols and ammunition stores were operating statewide! In 1904, Julius Kapp opened the world’s first modern firearms store in downtown Minneapolis and began sales of airguns online as well as through mail order from around the world. In 1934, Harry Wesselmann became the owner of Wesselmann Gunshop located on Third Avenue South near Lake Street (now part of Interstate 94). Here he continued to sell both guns and ammo until his death in 1978. From 1938-1943, Rufus Saunders operated Saunder’s Airgun Shop located on Second Avenue South across from Chautauqua Park before moving it to its present location on First Street Northeast near Hennepin County Road 121 (now I-394). Here he continued to sell both guns and ammo until his death in 1974. During World War II there was a serious shortage of firearms because so many people had been drafted into military service! However, because people could purchase airguns through private sellers or by mailed order they managed to procure some weapons nonetheless! In 1945 George Coker established Coker’s Airgun Shop on Main Street East just east of Highway 52 (now 3rd Ave S) which continued business until 1961 when it closed due to financial problems. In 1962-1966 Roy Bender operated Bender’s Gun Shop located on Fifth Avenue Northeast next door to Target Stores which also ceased operations due to financial difficulties shortly after opening; however Bender lived long enoughstone still mantained possession OF his original building until it was destroyed by fire circa 1984). Finally during the late 1960s-early 1970s Donny Dyer operated Dyer Gun Shop located on Sixth Avenue Southeast across from Emmett Stadium before moving it too its present location adjacent BP Supermarket where it continues today! Today North St. Paul has one of the largest concentrations of airgun retailers west of the Mississippi River with over 100 businesses selling all types of firearms including handguns, rifles/shotguns/pistols/ammunitions storage units etc., plus related items such as barrel lubes/oil/grit sandpaper etc., making it one Of The Most
