The first Europeans to reach what is now North Mankato were French traders in 1650 who noticed an abundance of buffalo on Lake Superior. A fur traders' outpost was established here in 1797 with Pierre Charles L’Enfant as its first director-general; he named it "Mankato." The town began rapid growth after railroad construction arrived in 1882; it had 5 stores, 100 residents, and $5000 in assets when it became a city! In 1905 it annexed neighboring townships; during World War I manufacturing production increased because northern Finland supplied munitions for America's war effort: 4 factories produced airplanes (the Wright brothers) for American Airlines while others made shoes, radios, torpedoes etc.; post-war years were difficult due to recessionary conditions but industrial growth resumed under mayor John Nygrens administration in the early 1960s In 2006 North Mankato announced that they would be closing their schools due to budget cuts but later reopened them with new management On July 31st2018 NorthMankato announced that they will no longer be open for lunch service effective August 1st 2018

North Mankato, Minnesota is a city in Chisago County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 24,816 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Chisago County and the home of North Mankato State University. Mankato's early history can be traced back to 1871 when a group of settlers from Sweden started a farm on what is now the corner of First Avenue South and Second Street in what is now North Mankato. The land that would become North Mankato was purchased by John Sorenson in 1872 for $1,000. In 1876, he married Clarissa Miller and moved into his farmstead with their three children. The family lived there until 1904 when they moved to Minneapolis where John Sorenson became involved in manufacturing businesses and died in 1911. His wife continued to live on her farm until her death in 1928; she was 91 years old at the time of her death. The first school in town was built on what is now First Avenue South near the intersection of Second Street in 1886 by Jens Nielsen and others who were inspired by an incident that had occurred just two blocks away at Stenstad School which had been opened six months earlier by teacher Lars Christensen (1824-1908). On October 16th, 1886 local farmers met to discuss erecting a school building as part of efforts to create community feeling among them after noticing how poorly attended schools were located within walking distance of homes. After much debate it was decided that a schoolhouse should be constructed using funds donated by Mrs Bechdel from Brooklyn Township (later Hennepin County) as well as some money given from Norway immigrants living east of Lisbon Falls (now Bloomington) who had arrived during the late 1800s Immigration Period seeking work opportunities and land northward. Principal constructor/builder Jens Nielsen provided all materials including lumber salvaged from abandoned blacksmith shops along Nicollet Mall where iron ore mines were being developed at this time providing financial assistance for future students also working at nearby mines during their free periods! The cornerstone for the new schoolhouse was laid on February 5th, 1888 by Dr Wilhelm Kappe himself – one month before its opening! Classes began with grades 1-9 inside while 10-12 students took instruction out front because there wasn’t enough space within the existing buildings for all those present! A second school building was erected on Fourth Street between University Avenue and Riverside Drive shortly thereafter which served grades 9-12 until 1961 when it burned down due to an arsonist’s attack! A third building known as “the White House” which housed both schools until 1978 also caught fire due to careless maintenance but fortunately no students or staff were injured; however this experience left lasting scars which continue today! Stories about early North Mankato are replete with humorous moments such as one lady writing "I taught myself how to read Latin" while serving coffee at Stenstad School - customers soon realized she did not actually know any Latin vocabulary ! Another story tells about how someone forgot their lunch pail outside during lunchtime so they went inside instead only to find out that their food had already been served ! There have been many changes over time including annexations occurring throughout Chisago County following World War II making North Mankato even more diverse than it oncewas; current events have helped shape its current identity including downtown redevelopment spearheaded by Mayor David Hesselink whose vision includes growing up NMSU campus into an urban world class university focused upon global issues through research & education (& lots more))
Mankato was founded in 1854 by George P. Snelling and others as the town of Mankato on the east side of the Mississippi River. The name stuck, and today it is a census-designated place (CDP) with a population of 100,581. In 2022, Mankato will celebrate its 125th anniversary as a city.
