After years spent struggling with funding issues related to annexing adjacent counties (Dodge County being among them), Mayor Fetterman's administration recognized that North Mankato had become one of America's "rusty old towns" – but he wanted it to be shiny and new again - so he spearheaded a project called "The New City Project". This involved demolishing most or all original buildings within downtown while creating brand new public squares and boulevards across town. 2/3s OF THE CITY'S AREA WAS REPLACED WITH NEW BUILDINGS IN A TIME WHEN THERE WERE NO PUBLIC TRANSPORTATIONS OR CENTRAL PARKING AND THE DEADLY RUSH TO ADD QUALITY OF LIFE TOWARD INCREASED POPULATION CAUSED MANY HURT AND DEATH BETWEEN THEN & NOW."
