The late 1800s also saw the beginning of windmills in the town, which led to an increase in target range activity. Gun ranges also became popular for hunting purposes during this time. In 1935, a local rifle club began offering lessons for adults on how to shoot handguns. Between 1936 and 1938, there was an annual tournament held at the local high school that featured several different types of guns as well as target shooters from around the area. Since then, there have been several other tournaments hosted throughout North Mankato each year, making it one of the most active Target Shooting Communities in Minnesota!

Minnesota's Gun History
North Mankato, Minnesota is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota and the county seat of Hennepin County. The population was 953 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The History of North Mankato Mankato's roots can be traced back to 1857 when Lighthouse Keeper John Prentice founded a trading post on an island in the river near present day downtown Mankato. The village grew up around this early business center, with stores, churches and homes built until 1909 when a tornado destroyed much of town and killed more than 60 people. Though rebuilt quickly, North Mankato experienced another devastating natural disaster in 1916 when a severe storm uncovered buried coal mines that had been hidden for over 100 years. As mining companies tried to start new operations near town, residents began to move out as conditions became too dangerous and unstable for their families to live in such close proximity to open coal mines. In 1949, North Mankato saw its first election as an incorporated city when it merged with neighboring Rochester into one municipality under the name "Rochester-Mankato." In 1978, after serving as an independent city for 36 years, Hennepin County annexed North Mankatos unincorporated areas east of Superior Avenue including portions of Brooklyn Park and Eden Prairie which made up what is today known as South Hennepin Township along Interstate 94 north of downtown Minneapolis proper (though most citizens still call themselves "Mankatans").
