The first guns were brought to the area by Dutch farmers in the early 1800s. The first gunsmith in North Mankato was John P. Fenton, who opened his shop in 1836. By 1840, there were five gunsmiths in the town. In 1851, a saloon and rifle range called the White Rose opened downtown and became home to the first shooting gallery ever built in Minnesota. Gun sales increased after this; customers could now purchase rifles and shotguns without having to go into a store. In 1861, North Mankato was incorporated as a city; it quickly became one of the most important towns in Minnesota due to its location on Hennepin County's east side and its status as an agricultural center. During World War I, North Mankato helped support Minneapolis with its munitions production; during the war, it also developed an armaments industry that produced automatic weapons and other munitions products. Since incorporation as a city, North Mankato has seen dramatic changes: It has seen increasing population growth (from about 1,000 people in 1870 to about 30,000 by 1930), suburban development (which has led to more traffic congestion and higher residential property values), industrialization (with many new businesses being founded here such as auto parts stores and restaurants), and significant redevelopment of downtown which has led to increased pedestrian traffic and renovated buildings including several hotels/restaurants/.

Mankato, Minnesota is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota and the county seat of Mankato County. The population was 12,825 at the 2010 census. The city is bordered by Stroudsburg to the east, Alexandria to the north, Crystal City to the northwest, and Rochester to the south. It is part of Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The area that would become Mankato was first settled by European settlers in 1824 as part of what would become Dakota Territory under President James K. Polk's administration as part of Treaty #8 between Great Britain and Dakota chiefs Sitting Bull and David Hunter. Fur traders and missionaries arrived in 1834 with plans for a fur trade center on this location called "Manka." In 1836, an act providing for school district organization passed both houses of Congress; but it died when Governor Andrew Johnson vetoed it because he felt that local control over schools should be vested only with central government agencies like railways or post offices instead of with individual townships or districts like Mankato did not need help from Washington D.C., where many officials were appointed by Polk himself. A group led by prominent landowner John Brimhall purchased 1,000 acres (4 km2) northeast of present-day Mankato in 1838 for $5 per acre ($140 per hectare). prompt settlement began on this tract which became known as "Brimhall's Prairie". In 1863, General George Armstrong Custer during his march through western Minnesota encountered Native Americans led by Sitting Bull at Rosebud Creek near present day North Mankato; Battle Of Rosebud Creek ended their pitched battle resulting in more than 50 deaths on both sides including Custer himself wounded three times but kept fighting until he was killed later that year while leading his men into captivity at Fort Hennepin Barracks outside Minneapolis
On July 8, 1858, the first settlers of North Mankato arrived. They were Methodist missionaries who came from Illinois. The town was named after a small Indian village on the Minnesota River. The town grew rapidly and by 1870 it had a population of over 100 people. The town was incorporated in 1872 and became a city in 1912.
