The first European to travel through the area was James Watt in 1793. A post office called North Mankato was established in 1854, and by 1860, it had a population of about 100 people. The city of Mankato officially became a city in 1902. In 1912, the Minnesota legislature approved the creation of a new county within Dakota County named after General John A. Macdonald as an effort to improve racial equality in the state. The nameMankato County was not chosen until much later and is still used today. In 1916, World War I began, and the United States government sent troops into the area to help Treaty of Versailles be negotiated. The military presence altered local demographics; North Mankato quickly became an industrial center with heavy production of munitions and other products related to war efforts. After the war ended, businesses slowed down as people returned home from serving in Europe or Asia; however, industry recommenced growth in the early 21st century when migrants started arriving from all over America looking for opportunities during what has been called "the Great Migration". Mankato is today known for its light-rail system which opened on September 15th, 2014 and replaced both buses and streetcars that served North Mankato since 1917
