The first gun barrels in North Mankato were made by John Thompson and Company in 1868. The company was started by John Thompson, a civil engineer, and his son-in-law, Amos W. Cobb. The guns were made of wrought iron and the first ones were shipped to Canada in 1870. They were used for target shooting. In 1872, the company was bought by Elisha Stevens and renamed Stevens & Co. The guns continued to be made by Stevens & Co., but from 1875 to 1916 they produced ammunition for the U.S. armory at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland (then part of Washington D.C.).
North Mankato is a city in Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 25,895 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hennepin County. North Mankato is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. The city's history dates back to 1849 when it was called "Mankato". In 1872, it became part of the new Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area and incorporated as a municipality. On February 14, 1912, North Mankato was designated by the Minnesota Legislature as capital of Hennepin County after its location on Kirksville Road made it an ideal spot for government operations and administration. The first mayor of North Mankato was J P Weeks. On November 4, 2016, North Mankato voters passed a referendum that would rezone their city to make it more densely populated with more high-density development around schools and other public services like transportation hubs and shopping malls. This rezoning would bring about significant job growth for residents throughout the city and help spur economic development in nearby neighborhoods

Mankato (MN) is a small town located in the northeast corner of Minnesota. The population was 6,852 at the 2010 census. Mankato is one of the oldest towns in Minnesota, dating back to 1854. It has experienced significant growth since then, both through annexation by neighboring towns and as a result of its location on the Mississippi River floodplain. Mankato was founded by Norwegian immigrants in 1854 as North Mankato. The name derived from an old Dakota word meaning "place where many people gathering." North Mankato became part of Minneapolis-St. Paul when that city was incorporated in 1865. The influx of Scandinavian immigrants during the late 19th century helped create a strong Norwegian community in Mankato. The American Civil War caused a large influx of refugees into Minnesota, and many Norwegians chose to stay in Mankato rather than leave their homes behind. After the war ended, many Norwegians continued to live and work in Mankato until World War II when they returned home to their native countries. During this time, North Mankatos largest industry was agriculture; however, recent arrivals have included processing plants for food products such as soybeans and corn processors and IT companies such as Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure cloud computing services
