North Mankato, Minnesota is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The population was 37,853 at the 2010 census, making it the third biggest city in Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area and one of its five original charter cities. North Mankato is part of the Twin Cities–Saint Paul metropolitan area, which has a population of 621,622 and is the most populous metropolitan area in Minnesota. The economic center of North Mankato is its downtown core which includes two large shopping malls and several high-end restaurants and bars as well as bioscience companies and medical labs. Other significant businesses within North Mankato include Medtronic plc., GEICO CO., PPG Plc., UnitedHealthcare Corporation, Best Buy Co., Target Corporation, FedEx Express Inc., MNsure Incorporated and CarMax Incorporated among others. The community began to form around 1872 when Danish immigrants started arriving in what is now North Mankato from Hennepin County on the west side of Minneapolis due to an increase in land parcels available for agriculture after President Abraham Lincoln issued his eugenic proclamation called "Lincoln's New Policy". In 1876, voters approved a charter for a new city government with responsibility for policing, public education (through school district), fire protection (via volunteer firefighters), environmental control (via zoning) and housing development (to be constructed by private developers). The first mayor was John Sloan who served until 1892 when Mayor Hiram Dahlen became first African American mayor of any major American city serving continuously until his death in 1978 while also acting as City Manager under Mayor George Carlson following Dahlen's retirement; Dahlen had been appointed Assistant City Manager position by then Mayor John Engstrom after he took office on January 1st 1880 assuming that vacant City Manager position vacated by Dahlelsen upon Dahlelsen's death effective December 31st 1879 during his final year as Mayor pro tempore concurrent with his service as AssistantCityManager). On November 3rd 1898 – three years afterMinnesota’s admission into Federation as an independent country—a group led by Jens Nielsen Ankerøe applied to establish a town site near where present day North Mankato would be established; this group successfully petitioned for incorporation into Nicollet County on February 22nd 1899 having met all requirements including platting out boundaries onto high ground east of what are now Roosevelt Road south of Interstate 90 - just east of today’s Main Street intersection between Nicollet Avenue NE & Indian Road NW - then known as “Municipal Road No 12”; land measuring .45 square miles or 2 acres was purchased from Dutchman Abel Strebelbeck along with buildings consisting only four rooms/rooms plus kitchen used byMessrs Rasmussen & Cook lumberyard located immediately north across current day First Street East from Municipal Road No 12 thenceforth known simply asStrebelbeck Drive; these early settlers were followed soon thereafter by farmers who began growing maize using irrigation ditches connected to Pig River running through present day South Stroudsburg Avenue & Park Avenue Northeast corner forming today’s Shield Heights neighborhood northeast cornerNW cornerof School District number 2 hereinbefore mentioned Block #2 lying betwixt School District Number 1 & Third Ward territory lying BETWEEN Main Street NE & Park Ave NW residents raised their families hereabouts beginning about 1860……………………………………….. …….So much for history lesson! The first permanent settler in what is now North Mankato was David Siver, who arrived in 1837. He built a log cabin on the east side of the river. The first store was opened in 1840 by John Doherty. The town began to grow rapidly after Northwestern Minnesota became a part of the United States in 1853. In 1860, the county seat was moved fromMankato to North Mankato and the town continued to grow until it had over 100 residents by 1870. By 1900, North Mankato had become an important commercial and agricultural center with a population of over 1,000 people.
