This opened up new opportunities for businesses in North Branch; those that could not grow their own food began to sell products they made or shipped from elsewhere including meat, eggs, flour, lumber and other materials needed for manufacturing The Mount Rushmore Railroad depot served as a stop on its route between Stomac Falls and Minneapolis until 1945 when it closed down due to declines in passenger traffic along with other railroads throughout the Midwest during World War II During World War II many residents took advantage of military bounties offered for German POWs within Minnesota; some families even pooled resources to purchase items like cattle or shoes necessary for their loved ones inside Germany A post office reopened in North Branch on July 8, 1946 after being closed for more than two years due to lack of mail service from Winnipeg . The original building still stands today as part of the North Branch Historical Society Museum .
