The North Branch, Minnesota community of North Branch is located in Ramsey County. The community was founded as a log cabin colony in 1854. It was named after the North Branch of the St. Johns River, which ran through the area. The first settlers were farmers and their families who arrived from Illinois in 1855. The community grew quickly and by 1860, it had a school and a church. In 1865, the United States Post Office was established in the community and it continued to grow until it closed its doors in 1911. In 1925, the United States Congress passed an act that created the Rural Electrification Administration (REA) to provide power to rural residents across America. The North Branch became one of REA's first recipients and began receiving electricity from American Electric Power (AEP) on November 1st, 1925. AEP built two small dams in North Branch to generateelectricity for local homes and businesses. Although AEP provided electricity for many years, they discontinued operations on January 1st, 1998 due to budget cuts caused by economic recession throughout much of America at that time. As part of AEP's efforts to discontinue operation, all electric rates within 100 miles of Minneapolis were increased by 25%. This increase impacted most areas within walking distance of central city Minneapolis but not those closer to farmlands or rural communities such as North Branch where electric rates remained unchanged despite large increases outside central city neighborhoods during this time period.).

SouthwesternMinnesota became a boomtown as farmers turned to irrigation water resources for their crops as well as Forks of the Mississippi for lumber production. In 1872, John Aiken founded Aiken’s Mercantile Institution with two stores and a post office at what are now downtown Minneapolis and Snelling Avenue Northeast today. Many businesses were established around this time including Jansen & Sons Brewing Company (now part of MillerCoors), Aiken Lumber Company (now part of MenomineeLumber) and numerous others during what would be known as “the commercial golden age” for northcentral Minnesota communities such as North Branch
