North Branch is a town in Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 4,864 at the 2010 census. North Branch was established in 1856 as a result of the merger of two communities, Cherry Grove and North Newton Township. The town was named after the river north of it on which it sat. The first post office in North Branch was established on March 17, 1857, by James Geddes. It operated for three years before being moved to its present location near what is now Interstate 45 and Highway 169. In 1883 the townsite was purchased by Gustavus Wirths from his father-in-law John Dillingham for $1,000 cash. Wirths renamed the town North Branch after himself and laid out a new town grid based on thoseervices he had accomplished in Cherry Grove and Newton Township. In 1907 Fruita Reed became manager of the Northern Pacific Railway's Duluth Division; she organized several demonstrations to show that farmers could benefit from railway service throughout their territory if they adopted crop insurance policies designed to help protect their crops from damage by severe weather events such as hurricanes or tornado outbreaks. These demonstrations helped convince many farmers to sign up for insurance policies and thereby guarantee an income during bad seasons. This led to increased freight traffic through North Branch because these shipments were no longer dependent upon storms hitting nearby villages or towns; instead they would be delivered directly to consumers across the state line at Hibbing, Minnesota. Like most small towns throughout America during this time period, North Branch experienced turmoil due largely to factors beyond its control: World War I interrupted agricultural production across much of Minnesota while demand for munitions soared nationwide; Prohibition began limiting alcohol sales in rural areas while opening up more stores within urban centers; labor unrest arising from changes brought about by World War II resulted in companies moving jobs away from rural areas into larger cities where wages were lower and working conditions worse (this pattern continued into the postwar era).
