The town's growth slowed throughout the 1920s as it became increasingly dependent on agriculture for its income. However, during World War II some new development took place including an airfield used by the United States military which later became known as North Central Air Force Station (now part of Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport). The post office closed in 1970; however, it reopened under new name North Branch Supply Company two years later after being bought by Alcoa Incorporated. In 1986 Alcoa made major investments into northcentral Minnesota which led to increased population growth; however this also caused problems with water use since much of northcentral Minnesota is hilly terrain prone to landslides when wetter weather approaches. In 2013 Alcoa merged with Rio Tinto Plc., creating one of world's largest aluminum companies - making northcentral Minnesota one of its primary business areas Since then many businesses have relocated or closed due to competition from larger cities such as Minneapolis-St Paul or Iowa City; neverthelessresidential real estate values continue to increase as people commute into these larger metropolitan areas for jobs or pleasure purposes

In 1855, Nicollet County was created from parts of Dakota and Morrison counties; part of it lies within territory currently comprising much of Minnesota's northeastern border. On July 1st that year, sections of segments between Nicollet County lines and those in adjacent Iowa Territory became sectional boundaries when Iowa became a U.S. state. On December 3rd 1870, South Dakota became an independent country after its admission into the Union as the 25th state; on this date North Branch Township was organized within South Dakota Territory according to provisions made in the Organic Act (1867). North Branch Township was organized at an important junction where two streams met: West Fork North Branch (now Hennepin Avenue) flowed southeast along Hennepin Avenue past Maple Grove Baptist Church towards downtown Minneapolis while East Fork North Branch flowed northwest along State Highway 12 towards Granite Falls near Dickinson City.* These branches continue today as named streets south of I-94 (Hennepin Street east to Nicollet Avenue), west of I-94 (Nicollet Street south to Mankato Avenue), or east off I-94 (Mankato Avenue north to Hennepin Avenue).†††* map This paper will focus exclusively on East Fork North Branch because this is where most village development took place beginning around 1800 until after World War II when Interstate 94 linked these areas together more effectively.*‡‡‡ map
After the American Civil War, the North Branch of the Minnesota River became a westward flowing tributary of the Mississippi River. The North Branch was first French Road, later called Clearwater Road, and then United States Highway 2. The present-day route of US 2 overlaps with that of US 9 near its junction with MN 5 in Cook County. In 1881,MN 5 was extended east from Cook County to meet US 2 near its junction with MN 8 in Ramsey County.
