In 1902, a school and hospital were constructed east of present-day North Branch. It became part of nearby Hastings when that community merged with North Branch in 1910. The town's first store opened on Main Street in 1857, and its first physician was Dr. Samuel Wiggs. A bank and insurance company were organized soon afterwards, and early businesses included a lumberyard, grocery store, blacksmith shop, seed mill (owned by Jens Olsen), doctor's office (established by Drs John Hennepin and George Mower), an agricultural show barn (leased to Jesse Rasmusen), a garage (later used as a church services building), two residences (one for each sex) and four schools: one for boys only (1857–59), one for girls only (1861–63;grades 7 through 12) – including an academy for girls – one taught arithmetic (1864), woodworking ( 1865 ), cooking chemistry with ovens then gas ranges heating up water to make tea or coffee(1868–72;grades 9 through 12) One resident served as Mayor from 1885 to 1889 while others served terms from 1870 to 1880 et al . . . Some residents took upon themselves the task of running their own city hall during this time period which later became known as “Hastings” but ultimately failed due to lack of funding/support From 1893 until 1903 there also existed what is now known as “Plymouth” which had its own dispensary/hospital although Plymouth township never annexed North Branch Township
