North Branch is located about 15 miles north of Minneapolis and about 25 miles east of Winnipeg. The population of North Branch was 1,711 at the 2000 census. The first settlers in what is now North Branch were Irishmen who arrived from County Tipperary in Ireland in 1872. They built a log cabin near present day North Branch and named it after their hometown of Kilkenny, Ireland. Over time, other Irish immigrants also came to North Branch, making it one of the most diverse communities in its region. North Branch's growth as a community began slowly but steadily over the next few decades. In 1907, the railroad company merged with another railroad company and this led to increased traffic and more people coming to town. By 1920, North Branch had reached its current size and status as a rural community with businesses and residents located all around downtown. During World War II, many residents took up arms against Nazi Germany because they believed that they could help save democracy from fascism within their own country. Many women served in military roles during this time and some became known as "the bravest women" for their heroism during the war effort. In 1951, when Interstate 75 bypassed South Dakota along its route throughMinnesota, North Branch became an important node on the highway system because it connected both states together at an interchange just outside of town limits. Today, Interstate 285 passes through town center while Interstate 794 (MN-173) runs concurrent nearby providing access to larger cities such as Minneapolis and Winnipeg on one side while ND-94 skirtsouthwestwardly providing access to smaller towns like Stillwater on the other side - giving North Branch a unique mix of two major highways running concurrently through its core!
The North Branch of the Minnesota River was first populated in 1851. The river had been passed through by the Paleo-Indian and Dakota peoples, who had named it for a branch of the Mississippi River. The first European to live along the North Branch were traders and missionaries from Sweden and Finland. In 1867, mining began on the north bank of the river, and within 10 years there were over 100 companies mining coal and other minerals along what is now known as the North Branch Mine Road. By 1910, three million tons of coal were mined from this stretch of the North Branch. Mining ceased in 1927 when a dam was constructed upstream to prevent water flooding during heavy rains.
