The first European settlers arrived in what is now New Ulm Township on November 15, 1853, when John Armstrong set out from Ramsey with three oxen to find land for his new farmstead known as Garden Prairie Township 3 miles (4 km) away along White Earth Creek. Armstrong's nephew, James Armstrong Jr., also settled there about this time; he would later become one of America's most successful merchants and developers in Minnesota history. In 1854 or 1855 Isaac Healy established a wagon trade route between Stroudsburg (now West Allis), Pennsylvania and Cedar Rapids via present-day Easton (then called Clearwater). In response to this business opportunity, Healy named his new township after himself – Healy Township 5 miles (8 km) east of where he lived at Garden Prairie Manor on Livingston Avenue today.(1) In early 1856, Alexander McKay moved his family into what is now part of NewUlm from Goodhue Township west of Minneapolis.(2) McKay had been employed by David Richardson & Co., Merchants Bankers Association members who operated a stagecoach line linking Mankato with Duluth.(3) On March 12th that year an act was passed by the state legislature entitled "An Act for Regulation of Commerce withinthis Territory" which created Portage County 6 miles westward including present-day NewUlm(4)(5). This legislation allowed for inland navigation on both rivers through territory then belonging to Dakota Territory without reimbursement from territorial governments.* At this time no town existed within Portage County other than Red Wing; however Sioux Falls had recently been organized as an unincorporated community northwestward from Red Wing.(6)(7)(8)(9)(10). Consequently, it seems likely that prior to 1862 much or all of what is now NewUlm Township lay within Dakota Territory north either side of South Dakota State Highway 10.) New Ulm is a city in southern Minnesota. The population was 24,827 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hennepin County and the administrative center for New Ulm Township. The name "New Ulm" is said to come from a Dakota word meaning new settlement. The first settler in what would become New Ulm was Nicholas Nerbonneau in 1854. In 1872, John Woysom built his sawmill on the banks of the river that now forms downtown NewUlm. Downtown NewUlm experienced its most rapid growth following World War II when war production increased demand for housing and other products produced here such as aircraft parts and munitions manufacturers also located hereabouts like Raytheon Corp., Northrop Grumman Corporation and Hughes Aircraft Corporation among others In 1955, Interstate 94 was constructed through townhood boundaries making it much easier to access job opportunities outside of town limits while improving transportation within town limits by connecting Twin Cities with Duluth via Highway 10 across the Mississippi River gorge The current incarnation of downtown New Ulm began when developers Memorial Properties purchased land east of Center Square between Broadway Boulevard and First Avenue in 1967. They razed several buildings on Center Square between First Avenue & Broadway Boulevard before beginning construction on what would eventually become known as Memorial Plaza which featured an indoor/outdoor pool complex fitness center basketball courts tennis courts soccer fields lacrosse goals baseball diamond Additionally they demolished numerous buildings along Broadway Boulevard & Center Square between First Avenue & Second Avenue creating an open plaza that could be used for any event or meeting needs without having to worry about getting lost amongst all those buildings again On July 17th 1984 Union Pacific Railroad donated their right-of-way through DowntownNewUlmertowards Eden Prairie allowing developers Memorial Properties Incorporatedto build Interstate 94 into town limits increasing access along with jobs available thanks to vehicular traffic diverted onto Main Street from interstate 575 just north of town Limits Today much has changed since then with more than 15 million dollars invested throughout DowntownNewUlmernumerically speakingover 100% retail development taking place inside or adjacent to Municipal Services Building including REI outdoors movie theaters Target - largest single occupant within state mall - Barnes & Noble bookstore RadioShack -- one full time employee employed within buildingongoing operation since dayone!
