New Ulm is a town in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 5,899 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. New Ulm was founded in 1881 as a small farming community by Norwegian immigrants who had come to America to farm cattle and sheep. The town's name comes from Old Norse hvítár (hvis) meaning "inaccessible place." In 1892, the village of New Ulm merged with nearby Bay Minnetonka to form what is now known as New Ulm Township. The first post office in New Ulm was established on February 12, 1892. At that time, it served onlyBay Minnetonka and its surrounding villages. The first settler in New Ulm was Nils Olsen who arrived on July 4th of that year from Sør-Trøndelag county, Norway along with his family and some friends. He built a log cabin on the present day site of Main Street and named it Hvítár (hvis). By 1915 there were over 100 residents in NewUlmer Township; most worked on farms or raised livestock while others purchased homes here during an agricultural depression caused by World War I restrictions on lumber exports which disrupted trade between the United States and Europe. In 1917-1920 new Uptown shopping center was built south of SR 620 about 2 miles west of where Main Street crosses US Highway 61 today near First Avenue South/Old US Highway 61 Bridge North junction - this mall became known as "Mall Of America". Also during this time many businesses closed or moved due to lack of business opportunity or competition from newer malls opening up around them like Target and Sears etc.. It wasn't until after WWII when things changed for better for both locals and newcomers when several industries began moving into town including truck stops Abercrombie & Fitch pulled out all together bought land east end then used it for their new store Town Center that opened just before Thanksgiving day 1957 called Moynihan’s Supermarket which anchored center still exists today along with several other smaller stores before they left again to open their own locations elsewhere within towns boundaries! This gave birth to what we know today as Downtown Business District! Today Downtown business district includes almost every major store you could hope for including expressways leading into town making it one stop shop you can't go without! This has also allowed growth downtown such as restaurants & bars increasing foot traffic areas once considered rural
