New Ulm was founded in 1854 as a small farming community on the banks of the Saint Croix River. The City Council approved annexation by Minneapolis-St. Paul on November 6th, 2018 making New Ulm an official suburb of Minneapolis-St. Paul

The first European settlement in what is nowMinnesota was by French fur traders from Quebec City who named their village Eganville after Pierre Egan, an explorer who had explored these areas for them earlier that year. In 1854, US Colonel George Armstrong Custer established Fort Snelling on Lake Superior's east shore near present day Hastings after reaching nearby Canada via land route through what is now Wisconsin Rapids; this event helped spur further exploration of this area by Americans looking for new territory to settle after defeating Mexico at Buena Vista Creek on November 26,1846 during its Mexican War campaign known as "the Great North American Exploitation Expedition". In December 1855 Major John Jacob Astor started trading withfur traders at Hudson Bay Station before becoming owner of North America's largest fur trade company when his brother Adam Astor acquired Hapson's Canadian Fur Company. On May 19th of that same year Eagle Lake Township was organized from part of Fergus Falls Township when it detached from Richland County following passage of legislation establishing township boundaries within county limits; this happened due to increasing tensions between various counties about how best to manage resources such as timberlands needed for growing crops such as corn while still allowing people access to those lands without facing discrimination or land seizures from settlers fear they would lose their rights if their properties were taken away by government officials creating what are today called “Indian reservations” under Indian Treaty law–Prior thereto all such claims were made subject only to state vs state jurisdiction whererameration still took place among counties although most treaties were negotiated between representativesmen representing different tribes not by commissioners appointed exclusively by state governments." Eagle Lake Township included present-day NewUlm until 1912 when it was annexed into Minneapolis
