Peterson as New Ulm Township with a population of five people. On December 11th,1887 the township was made an incorporated municipality with a population of fifty-four people under the name “New Ulm”
The city of New Ulm was founded in 1857 by a group of surveyors led by Territorial Governor David Thompson. The town was named for John Nye, an early settler who had helped organize the Minnesota Territory. In 1865, the new Senate District No. 2 included the towns of Duluth and New Ulm and was organized as a county. In 1868, New Ulm became a city and was incorporated as a borough. On March 3, 1870, Minneapolis and St. Paul were consolidated into one city with a population of over 200,000 people. The consolidation caused many businesses to relocate to Minneapolis or St.Paul so that they could be nearer the new metropolis' business district and its growing population. In 1898, the City Council passed an ordinance providing for women's suffrage in Minnesota; this legislation was later amended to allow voting by men only after passage of a law granting voting rights to all citizens regardless of sex). On January 1, 1906, Minneapolis merged into what is now called Saint Paul County; however, New Ulm remained part of Minnesota until 1914 when it annexed into Duluth County along with other nearby municipalities including Hibbing (1893), Wadena (1901), Cannon Falls (1905), and White Bear Lake (1907). New Ulm experienced significant growth during World War II as many soldiers from across America moved to the area to fight in battle against Nazi Germany or Japan. The war also spurred development in the downtown area which saw construction of factories such as Armoury Corporation and DuPont munitions plants. In 1948, New Ulm annexed Griggs Township which lay immediately south of its current boundaries; this annexation created what is now known as West Side Neighborhoods neighborhood on east side of I-5 corridor between Northeast 92nd Street & Southeast 6th Avenue
