New Ulm, Minnesota is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The population was 34,814 at the 2010 census, making it the second-largest city in the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area after Minneapolis. New Ulm is home to Mayo Clinic and other leading medical institutions as well as to a number of high-tech companies and businesses. The city is also known for its annual corn festival, which attracts several thousand people each year. The first Europeans to explore what is nowMinnesota were French traders and missionaries in 1653 who named their new land Nouvelle-Orléans after Orléans, France. When they explored further they found that the land was not only empty but also had great resources including timber, lead ore, and coal reserves which led them to establish a permanent settlement there in 1763 by fur traders from Montreal under the leadership of Pierre La Salle called Fort Rouge (later renamed New Ulm). New Ulm became an important center for fur trading with Indian allies during much of the 18th century until European contact ended with Indians about 1800 due to disease and war efforts on both sides. In 1854, when Minnesota became part of Dakota Territory following Dakota War II, New Ulm became its capital; it remained so until 1907 when other cities within Dakota Territory gained increased autonomy from their respective territorial governments. The Great Northern Railway built a line through central Minnesota from Saint Paul to Duluth in 1894; this led to rapid growth in manufacturing throughout north Twin Cities County including New Ulm where heavy industries expanded into small towns such as Allentown (1903), Elkhart (1905), Goodyear (1910), Chaska (1920) and Nissen Hausfeldt Tire Company(1927). This prosperity created many local families wealthy enough to buy homes outside of downtown Minneapolis/StPaul City Limits by 1925; some examples include those of Engelhard family who bought Overlook Park near downtown StPetersburg in 1905 while others like Harry Koehler who purchased Addison Road east of townline in 1922 – these purchases helped turn downtown into one large commercial district known today as Old Town NewUlm which includes most if not all surviving buildings dating back before World War I including the brick courthouse still standing today on Third Avenue south of University Drive – although much has been replaced or destroyed over time principally due to fire damage caused by streetcars running down Third Avenue during reliable streetcar service between 1904-1950s particularly around East Village Historic District just northeast of current day University Drive) One resultof Rapid City's economic success was social unrest which characterized parts of western Minnesotan society for many years prior thereto culminating with Wild West Showman show jumping at Bush Lakeoutside present day Rochester Hills late 1920s resulting in $1 million liability against company

New Ulm is a small town in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The population was 10,034 at the 2010 census. It lies in the far northwest corner of the state and is bordered by Cook County to the east, Ramsey County to the north, and Wanamaker County to the west. The area that now makes up New Ulm was first settled in 1854 by Norwegian immigrants who had recently come overland from Norway. By 1870, an American paper mill had been built on a bend in the river near where it enters Lake Superior, and by 1880, New Ulm had become an important stopping place for travelers on what was then called "the Great Northern Railway." In 1907, when Minnesota became a part of United States after being admitted as a territory in 1848, New Ulm became its newest village and remained so until 1959. At that time it merged with neighboring community Maplewood to form what is today known as New Ulm-Maplewood Village. In 1960, however, due to zoning changes instituted by Minneapolis/St Paul city officials at that time, Maplewood reverted back to its earlier name; however, it remains part of New Ulm's public school district today. The history of New Ulm goes back even further than this - its roots can be found within one of Minnesota's earliest white settlements: Deerfield Township (now Dakota Heights). Settlers arrived there during 1855–1856 wave of Scandinavian immigrants seeking new homes in what were then remote areas of northeastern Minnesota Territory. The township's namesake was John Dennison - one of two men (the other being Elias Rasmusen) chosen by General Sherman as his military governor forMinnesota Territory following his April 14 march through NorthwesternMinnesota into Sioux country A few weeks later settlers discovered big fat clams lying on shoreline about three miles offshore from present day Deerfield Beach onpresent day Whitefish Bayou; they named this location “Deerfield Clam Harbor” after their successful landing here A branch settlement developed around this clambake point which came to be called “New Deerfield”
New Ulm is the home to one of the largest concentration of Native American communities in the United States. The area was first settled by Sauk and Fox Indians in the early 1800s. At the time, it was part of a tract owned by David Thompson, who had been sent to North America as a ' trader/ missionary '. In 1854, New Ulm became part of Minnesota when it was organized as a state. In 1922, Minnesota's Indian Act was passed which required all Native American tribes in the state to go through an agency process to become federally recognized. As a result, many New Ulm residents became owners and operators of their own businesses.
