In 1871, a group of men from New Ulm, Minnesota founded the National Rifle Association (NRA) in order to promote and protect firearms. The NRA has been promoting gun rights ever since. The organization has also hosted numerous events such as the Million Mask March and annual deer hunting season open-air rally at their Oak Brook headquarters. T-shirts featuring NRA imagery have been popularized throughout history. Some of the earliest examples are a t-shirt that features an image of American Revolution War General George Washington holding a rifle, and another that features an image of both President John F Kennedy and Sheriff Richard Mclaren holding rifles while standing next to an American flag. The town was named for New Ulm, Germany. New Ulm was originally just a small farming community with no industry or trade. In 1919, the first commercial building in New Ulm was built; it became known as the "People's Store." Over time, other businesses followed suit: a post office (1927), an insurance company (1929), a restaurant (1939), and finally a bank (1960). The growth of New Ulm led to some controversy; in particular, concern over how much development could be done without disturbing the old farming communities nearby. However, over time, most people in NewUlm came to support their community's growth and character. The town today is known for its architecture – including its many churches – as well as its rich cultural heritage which includes music hall performances and art exhibitions from around the world. In recent years there have been efforts to preserve aspects of both local culture and history within NewUlm while also promoting economic development opportunities within the community. One such initiative is called "Downtown Development Initiative," which aims to redevelop downtown areas into more vibrant shopping destinations that are accessible to all residents of NewUlm who want to enjoy modern amenities without having to leave their homes. This initiative has helped create new jobs and bring energy back into downtown areas while preserving important historical elements like the People's Store building and St Mary's Episcopal Church
In 1847, the town of New Ulm was laid out by Major John P. Sauer and his brother-in-law, Winthrop Beecher. The town was named after General Lafayette's home in France. The first settler in New Ulm was Samuel Untermeyer, who arrived in 1848. In 1850, John Gorman opened a store on the east side of the river and later became the first postmaster. In 1854, George Waddell opened a bakery on Center Street and soon afterwards developed into a major grocery business with stores throughout the town. By 1860, New Ulm had a population of about 100 people. During the Civil War (1861-1865), New Ulm supported the Union forces while Confederate forces burned down most of its businesses. After 1865, many residents moved to other parts of Minnesota or relocated to Iowa due to economic reasons. In 1872, Mayor Jotham Crain built a new courthouse which still stands today on Main Street. That same year also saw the opening of First National Bank - one of Minneapolis' earliest banks - and construction began on what is now Seventh Street south of downtown as part as Third Avenue South for streetcars (the street name has since been changed). The city's population exploded during World War II with more than 60% growth from 1941 to 1945; this period also saw development along Seventh and Eighth Avenues south of downtown including two large apartment buildings that stand to this day as some of Minneapolis’ tallest landmarks. New Ulm experienced significant revitalization following its incorporation into Minneapolis in 1965; many new businesses and restaurants were developed in what is now Midtown Crossing Shopping District near downtown and much older neighborhoods such as Old South Side were rediscovered for living again thanks to redevelopment efforts orchestrated by Mayor Melvin Weinreb & City Councilmember Norm Coleman over several decades culminating in rezoning requests from developers which resulted in rampant building activity throughout central Minnesota known locally as “The Redevelopment Project."
