New Hope is a small town in Minnesota, located about 20 miles north of the capital of Minneapolis. The population was 5,696 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. New Hope was founded in 1873 by Norwegian immigrants who had come to America on hopes of finding a better life. The community grew rapidly after it was created as a result of an act by the Minnesota Legislature in 1912, which authorized the creation of new towns within the boundaries of existing cities and villages. The original town site was near what is now East Bloomington and North Maple Street, and according to one account, "the first grocery store opened its doors on Second Avenue just east of Main Street." In 1915, New Hope became home to what is now Stonington High School after it merged with nearby South Bloomington Township. In 1922, when Minneapolis-St Paul Regional Airportopened south of town (renamed Wright-Patterson Air Force Base later), New Hope became one of its initial communities served by that airport. In 1970, when New Hope village passed into state control under legislation known as "The Municipal Consolidation Act," it lost much cultural significance but regained some after local officials successfully lobbied for changes in zoning laws that allowed more businesses and homes to be built within its boundaries without having to go through city approval - something that hadn't been possible before. Today, New Hope remains a vibrant community with strong ties to its rural past and its proximity to downtown Minneapolis; however, many residents continue to commute into the city for jobs or services available only a few miles away. New Hope's unique history has given rise to several legends about its early settlers: For example, one version claims that two brothers named John Sivertsen started farming there in 1873; another asserts that David Hauser came from Norway with his family in 1876; still others claim that Ole Halsey arrived thereabouts in 1878 or 1879 - all three men were eventually counted among the founding citizens as part of a group known as The Pioneers (later renamed The United Norwegian Americans). Regardless of their actual origins - each legend has stuck around due eitherto popular demand or because locals believe it tells some interesting story about how theircommunity developed over time. New Hope, Minnesota was founded in 1853 by James and Mary Morrison. The town was named for New Hope Chapel, a Methodist church that had been built in 1841 on the site of a previous Indian trading post. The city experienced rapid growth during the 20th century, thanks to its status as an important agricultural center. But during the 1990s, New Hope underwent significant financial troubles and lost its status as a local economic powerhouse. Today, New Hope is a small community with few resources remaining aboveground. However, it remains an important cultural and historical center in Minnesota.
In 1881, a group of entrepreneurs pooled their money to start New Hope Mills. The mill provided flour and other products to the area for years until it closed in 1935. The site of the New Hope Mills was used as a munitions plant from 1942-1945. After the war, many small businesses were established on the property, including an ice cream parlor and a printing press. In 1966, the mill was sold to Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company (MMM). MMM renovated and reopened the mill as a yarn factory in 1978. It closed in 1985. Today, part of the property is occupied by First United Methodist Church and part by Minneapolis Community College’s Central Campus.
