The town quickly grew due to its proximity to Fort Snelling which opened in 1851 and served as a military base for soldiers traveling along the river route between Minneapolis and St Paul. During this time period, New Hope also became known for its produce: potatoes were grown here extensively while onions were cultivated nearby; furthermore, cornmeal was ground into flour here for baking goods like bread or cookies. In addition, lumbering activity played an important role in New Hope's development; trees were cut down here for sawmills that produced boards used for building materials such as floors or ceilings throughout North America. As new settlements sprang up around Minneapolis (such as Mankato), those living near Fort Snelling began selling their land holdings back home so that they could become part of what would become Minneapolis proper. By 1870, when NewHope had reached its peak population size of around 12,000 people,[2] it had developed into one of Minnesotas largest communities.[3] With railroad construction coming through town shortly thereafter (the first line arrived in 1872), agriculture rapidly went out of favor and most residents turned towards work on railways – although some continued farming until well into the 21st century[4]. Despite this decline however, many residents still retained strong ties to their hometown[5]. In fact, many locals still return annually to visit family and friends over Fourth of July weekend – something that has been steadily maintained since rename occurred back during World War II when Fort Snelling closed down completely because it no longer functioned as a military post.[6] Demographics As mentioned earlier, today's demographics within New Hope are largely similar to those who lived there during its heyday; however there are several exceptions worth noting including lower rates of incarceration (fewer than 100 per 1000 inhabitants) or poverty rate (less than 30%).[7] Additionally, some businesses located within town continue functioning even though they may not be actively marketed towards tourists,[8][9][10] further highlighting how much community involvement remains despite economic decline over time. Neighborhoods NewHope is bordered by Hennepin Avenue on the north side; Ridgeway Road on the east side; Harlem Avenue on both sides; Watertown Boulevard across from Interstate 94/I-94W; Allendale Heights neighborhood on south side; Riverside Park neighborhood on west side - all bisected by Hennepin Avenue - which forms Lake Street/Ridge Road divide separating neighborhoods administratively speaking while remaining generally contiguous geographically speaking[11]; [12][13][14] finally Elkader Avenue borders rural areas unofficially but theoretically lying outside of city boundaries

New Hope was renamed after World War II hero Admiral Chester Nimitz on July 5, 1947, when it was selected as the site for Naval Weapons Station Earling which would become Naval Air Station Sigonella. In 1957, Sigonella became an airbase with three runways and one runway being returned to use as a road surface after being damaged during Hurricane Agnes. In 1970-71, Sigonella received new housing units known as "The Village."
